![]() ![]() Just wanted to share that with you as you are a good friend. His name is Christopher and here is a picture of him. I have a grandson who will be sixteen on Christmas Day. He is the one who was hit by a car when he was eight and it left him in a wheelchair and he has never spoken since. Hope you have a great week hun and take care. Takes the pressure of people who have not got much to give. Our Legion Ladies Auxiliary used to give gifts too but when someone gave something that had been half used we stopped it now we all put in money and give it to the Downtown Mission. Here in Windsor it is called the "Downtown Mission" where they serve up meals for the homeless or down on their luck people who are finding it hard right now. I love doing things like that, what I mean is giving to "Toys for Tots" or the "Food Bank", both very good causes indeed. What a beautiful tradition and I couldn\’t think of a better one. Some years we have had food wrapped in white tissue paper for our food bank. They will distribute them to children who may not have much for Christmas. Along with our regular offering the children went up the isle with wagons to gather the gifts. They will be given to our nearest Lions club who have a Toy’s for Tots. This year our White Gifts were toys wrapped in white tissue paper. In keeping with the spirit of the first White Gift service all those attending bring a gift wrapped in white paper to be given to someone in need. Today, in churches that observe White Gift Sunday, the service usually takes the form of a drama which depicts some aspect of the Christmas story. All the gifts would come wrapped in plain white paper, so that no one would know which was an expensive gift and which was a more modest one. Instead of focusing on receiving gifts, the focus shifted to bringing gifts to Jesus that could in turn be shared with people around the world who did not have much. The story is told that a minister’s wife initiated the idea to solve the problem of inequity of gifts given at the Sunday school Christmas party. ![]() What began as a humble way to reflect on the love and devotion of the giver and not the value of the gift has grown into today’s white gift services in many churches across several denominations. The tradition of White Gift Sunday has its roots in a small Methodist church in Ohio in 1904. So in the manner of Curtis here is a history of the tradition of the White Gift Service. When I “google” this topic I only come up with the United Church of Canada and the Presbyterian Church. It’s just something we always had at our church and I didn’t realize not all churches participate it. I’m sorry I didn’t explain what a White Gift Service is. ![]()
